Following the incident at Babbs Mill Lake on Sunday 11 December:

A statement from the Most Reverend Bernard Longley, Archbishop of Birmingham, head of the Catholic Archdiocese of Birmingham.

“My heart goes out to all those affected by this tragedy and on behalf of the Catholic Archdiocese of Birmingham I offer my deepest condolences to the families and friends who have lost loved ones.

“We are truly saddened that Jack Johnson, a pupil from St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School, lost his life. His family and friends, the school and the wider community are in our thoughts at this very difficult time and we offer them our prayers.

“We prayed for Jack, and the other three boys who died, at a Mass of Remembrance at St Anthony’s Church in Kingshurst on Thursday morning (15 Dec).

“Support is in place at St Anthony’s school for the children, staff and parents and this will continue.

“Should anyone wish to take some time for quiet prayer and reflection St Anthony’s Church will be open and all are welcome.”
