Children in Coventry have visited one of the city’s foodbanks to hand over a bumper donation and find out more about how the vital charity works.

St Gregory’s Catholic Primary School has been helping those in need by collecting donations for the foodbank based at Walsgrave Baptist Church.

Children and staff have been collecting food since Easter and have also been learning more about who the charity helps.

A group of children from Year 4 and 5 at the school, which is part of the Romero Catholic Academy, have now visited the foodbank to hand over their donation, find out about how it is run and help sort the food before it is distributed.

The foodbank is one of 17 based across the city and is open on Thursday afternoons.

Al Neale, Coventry Foodbank team leader, said: “We are very grateful to the children and staff at St Gregory’s Catholic Primary School for their generous donation.

“It was wonderful to welcome them to our centre and show them what we do, and they were extremely helpful in assisting us.

“We rely on donations from the local community so to have them from a whole school was incredible. Anyone who would like to offer their support is very welcome to get in touch.”

The donation comes as the school celebrates expanding, with work starting on its new nursery which will open in September.

Principal Geraldine Marshall said: “We support a number of chosen charities at the school, but the children wanted to do something for those in need in their local area.

“All of the children have realised how fortunate they are after learning more about foodbanks, and it has really encouraged them to support those who are less fortunate - we have had an incredible response.

“We will continue supporting the foodbank going forward and will hopefully be able to present an even bigger donation in the future as we welcome more children to the school when our new nursery opens in September.”
