Muslims and Christians came together for a special project open day to join forces in the support of communities and the elderly.

The Birinus Communitas Wellbeing Project Open Day took place at Balsall Heath, Birmingham to show the kind of work being done and to emphasise the importance of local community support.

Representatives from the Muslim Educational Consultative Committee (MECC), Birinus Catholic Charity, Communitas, Birmingham City Council and local government came to share their thoughts and their support.

Eddie from English Martyrs in Sparkbrook related the work that had been done in relation with the Muslim Educational Consultative Committee (MECC).

After identifying issues particularly affecting the elderly, the group was able to apply for funding from Catholic charity Birinus. This funding helped to develop programmes of activity including exercises, meet and greet sessions and mental activities.

Reverend Mark Fisher from Solihull outlines work being done around dementia, creating the Moments Café, which provides a safe, reassuring and friendly environment.

Christophe Loughran, West Midlands High Sheriff stated: “People are keen to emphasise differences but we must focus on the things we have in common, not that which separates us. We must work together to show care for others.”

Cllr Zhor Malik of Balsall Heath West Ward said:

“Without these organisations there would be a lot of people missed and not helped.”

“It is really great seeing people of all faiths coming together and you will really make a difference.”
