Supporters of the St Vincent de Paul Society (SVP) enjoyed a Festival Mass and Gathering at St Chad’s Cathedral.

Over 120 people connected to the SVP Birmingham Central Council attended the recent event (Sat 24 Sept 2022).

The Mass, which was also live streamed for those who couldn’t attend, was celebrated by Archbishop Bernard Longley and concelebrated by Mgr Timothy Menezes, Dean of the Cathedral.

During the Mass, offered for St Vincent de Paul, there was an opportunity for SVP members to renew their promises.

A light buffet lunch followed, then a talk by the incoming SVP National President, Elaine Heyworth.

Mike Weaver, from the SVP Birmingham Central Council, said: “The whole day was a tremendous success.

“It was very heartening to see so many attending this special occasion. There were between 120 -130 present. It felt quite like ‘the good old days’ - pre pandemic.

“We were all impressed, excited and inspired by Elaine's contribution to the occasion. Both Elaine and Archbishop Bernard stressed the importance of offering practical help to those in need - particularly those who face the dreadful dilemma of ‘eat or heat’.”

Within the Archdiocese there are currently 77 local SVP groups (Conferences), 105 ‘Mini Vinnie’ groups in primary schools and 15 Youth SVP groups in secondary schools. There is always room for more.
