Solemnity of the Sacred Heart Celebration at Maryvale
by Mgr Daniel McHugh

The Mass with Novena Prayers on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Fri 16 June), was marked specially this year by a music group from the Eritrean Chaplaincy.

Father Solomon Tesfamichael and his group brought a new dimension to the Annual Celebration. The Congregation was enamoured with the musical contributions at the Offertory and Holy Communion, and a drumming interlude at the end of Mass.

The Mass was very well attended and the presence of Ethnic Communities was noted, especially representation from the Cameroonian Chaplaincy.

Maryvale, with the beautiful Chapel and the unique Shrine of the Sacred Heart, the first in the whole of England, had been the focus of a nine-day Novena of Masses leading to the solemnity.

A different priest came to celebrate the Mass each evening: welcomed by the 'regular' First Friday attenders and Fr Andrew McCann, the Chaplain to the Shrine, who saw to the preparations for Masses and welcome to the Celebrants, helped by a regular group of devotees.

Mgr Daniel McHugh was the main celebrant for the Mass on the Solemnity.

Bishop David Evans will be celebrating the regular First Friday Mass in September at 7pm.

Maryvale House has been the home of the Maryvale Institute for 43 years, providing degree courses for teachers, catechists and adults seeking to enhance their knowledge, understanding and witness to the Catholic Faith. The financial situation has endangered this work.

I am therefore very excited to hear that the distance learning Pontifical Degrees of Maryvale Institute are being continued from September.
