Closing of the Holy Door at Saint Peter's Basilica. The Jubilee Icon in the Archdiocese of Birmingham The official Jubilee icon visited three locations in the Archdiocese in January. In order to celebrate and commemorate the Jubilee Year 2025, Pilgrims of Hope, CAFOD commissioned an icon from artist Mulugeta Araya in Ethiopia, for the Catholic Church in England and Wales. Ethiopia was chosen because of the strong tradition of iconography within the country and to demonstrate that this is a global Jubilee – not just something that is happening in England and Wales. Tigray, the region in northern Ethiopia where the artist lives, is experiencing armed conflict, which has forced hundreds of thousands of people to leave their homes. Increasing droughts, irregular rains and poor soil mean many families are struggling to get enough to eat. This is particularly relevant given the Jubilee Year’s focus on those struggling with poverty. The challenges of painting an icon in this situation inspire us to reflect on the Jubilee text and this icon in a new light. The icon visited The Church of Blessed Dominic Barberi and Newman College in Littlemore, Oxford from Wednesday 8 to Wednesday 15 January. It then moved to St Chad's Cathedral from Thursday 16 to Tuesday 21 January. The final stop was St Teresa of the Child Jesus, Trent Vale, Stoke-on-Trent from Thursday 23 to Sunday 26 January. The Cathedral is open from Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 4pm, Saturday from 11am until after the 4.30pm Vigil Mass and Sunday from 9am until after the 11.30am Mass. Due to the current busy diary in our working Cathedral (involving organised school visits at least three mornings a week and organ classes and recitals at least two or three afternoons), can we suggest that you contact the Cathedral offices either by phone on 0121 230 6211 or via email at [email protected] before visiting so we can advise you of the best time to come; especially if you are arranging a parish pilgrimage? This way we can make sure that you have the most prayerful experience possible. We are in the process of planning additional Masses and Liturgies throughout the Jubilee Year and we will make sure these are advertised in good time. We look forward to welcoming you to St Chad’s Cathedral.
