Notice of Death

Please join Archbishop Bernard Longley in giving thanks to God for the long and fulfilled life of Mgr Louis McRaye, priest of the Archdiocese of Birmingham, who has died at the age of 104.

Born in 1915 and an accomplished academic in the fields of English and Law, he was ordained a priest in 1962, then on the staff of Grove Park, a pre-seminary Formation House near Warwick until 1966.

The contribution of his 57 years of priestly ministry will be remembered most as Catholic Chaplain to the University of Warwick (1966-83) and Spiritual Director at St Mary’s College, Oscott (1983-94).

As the Church prepares for the Canonisation of Cardinal John Henry Newman, Mgr McRaye was a dedicated friend and supporter of the work of the Newman Association, generously giving of his time to educate the laity.

In retirement, he lived and worked at Our Lady of the Wayside Church, Shirley (1994-2012) until he moved to St Joseph’s Home, Harborne, Birmingham, in the Care of the Little Sisters of the Poor.

May he rest in peace after his long life in the Lord’s service.
