A Coventry academy is celebrating the arrival of brand new minibuses and sportswear after an investment to help improve pupil engagement in a range of sporting events across the city and beyond.

The Romero Catholic Academy, made up of seven primary schools and one secondary school, has purchased eight new 17-seater minibuses.

The academy, which includes Corpus Christi, Good Shepherd, Sacred Heart, St Gregory’s, St John Fisher, St Patrick’s and SS Peter and Paul Catholic Primary Schools and Cardinal Wiseman Catholic Secondary School, was awarded an £8,000 grant from its catering provider, Caterlink, which was donated to promote wellbeing and increased pupil engagement in sports.

The academy put this towards the cost of the minibuses while also making a significant investment in the vehicles.

Each of the primary schools has also purchased new football and netball kits using funding from the Sugar Tax levy, which is used to promote healthy living.

Akuma sports, based in Kenilworth, were appointed to design and supply the sportswear which is in each of the schools’ individual colours.

The kits and vehicles will be used when the academy competes in events such as the School Games and the Coventry Primary Catholic Sports Association.

Patrick Taggart, Academy Business Director, said: “Sport is very popular across our schools and the new minibuses will make it easier for our children to attend more sports events and tournaments.

“They will also be used to attend non-sporting events and extra-curricular activities and will mean we no longer have to rely on hiring transport.

“The new football and netball kits give each school their individual identity but with a Romero Catholic Academy brand.

“We are absolutely determined to ensure that our 3,500 pupils receive a well-rounded education, and sport and wellbeing activities are important to us.

“This investment shows our commitment to providing our children with a broad curriculum and we would like to thank Caterlink and Akuma for their generous support.”
