Latest News Civic Mass at St Chad's Cathedral Hundreds gathered at St Chad’s Cathedral for the annual Civic Mass, on the occasion of The Feast of Christ the King. His Grace, The Most Rev Bernard Longley, Archbishop of Birmingham, was Celebrant and Preacher at today’s (Sun 24 Nov) service. This is a special occasion in the Cathedral calendar as clergy and parishioners welcome a number of civic dignitaries. These included Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant, John Crabtree OBE; the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Cllr Mohammed Azim and Her Majesty’s Judges. Other guests included service chiefs, council leaders, representatives from other faith groups and those from diocesan organisations. In his Homily Archbishop Bernard reflected on November being the month of Remembrance, and the importance of remembering together. And today’s Civic Mass focused on “remembering our friends across the city, sharing a moment of prayer and rededication, working together for the common good.” His Grace also referenced the good work of Anawim, a charity which supports women, and the recent Canonisation of St John Henry Newman, who made his home in Birmingham by choice. Today also marks National Youth Sunday, whereby young people across the Archdiocese were invited to be at the heart of the Mass celebration, with many delivering talks at services throughout the weekend.
