Hundreds of people gathered on Good Friday to take part in the ecumenical Walk of Witness in Birmingham.

The annual event, marking Christ’s journey to the cross, started once again from the Church in Carrs Lane and finished at St Chad’s Cathedral.

Sharing the lead alongside Bishop David Urquhart, Bishop of Birmingham, and Archbishop Bernard Longley, the Catholic Archbishop of Birmingham, were:
The Very Revd Matt Thompson, Dean of St Philip’s Cathedral; the Revd Steven Faber, Moderator of the United Reformed Church for the West Midlands Synod; and the Revd Ian Howarth, Chair of the Methodist Church, Birmingham District, with the Revd Neil Johnson, Revd Cristina Cipriani and Deacon Ruth Yorke from the Church at Carrs Lane with Major Samuel Edgar (Ret’d) from the Salvation Army.

The Very Revd Canon Dr David Oakley, Rector of St Mary’s College, Oscott, was also in attendance along with members of the formation staff and students.

The Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Councillor Yvonne Mosquito, also took part.

During the procession the crowds meditated on the Stations of the Cross, reflecting on two at each pause.

Special prayer cards were produced for the occasion, which were handed out with the Palm Branches.

At the conclusion of the Walk of Witness people gathered for Hot Cross Buns, tea and coffee.
