Missionaries of Mercy:

On Ash Wednesday, 10 February, Pope Francis officially commissioned Missionaries of Mercy, priests to preach on the theme of mercy and to be available more widely for the Sacrament of Reconciliation and to promote the Jubilee Year of Mercy where possible alongside their own diocesan duties.

Among those commissioned in Rome were Canon John Carlyle, a Birmingham Priest working as a Spiritual Director in Rome, and Fr Hugh Sinclair and Canon John Udris, Spiritual Directors at St Mary’s College, Oscott.

At the Chrism Mass on 23 March, at St Chad’s Cathedral, Archbishop Bernard named 25 more priests, to support these 3 Missionaries of Mercy in their duties. They comprise Birmingham diocesan priests and representatives of Religious Congregations and Priests from other countries currently working in our Diocese. They are…,

Fr Anthony Norton – Sacred Heart, Coventry
Fr Bernard O’Connor – St Mary’s, Harborne
Fr Roger Peck – St Dunstan’s, Kings Heath
Fr Mark Van Beeumen (MSC) – Aston, Birmingham

Each of these priests has been asked to discern how best he can respond to this request to support the Missionaries of Mercy. Here is the current list of availability: Ways in which the Ministers of Mercy are willing to help during the Year of Mercy 4

Fellow priests or individuals may seek their ministry but are asked to understand that depending on the number of requests they receive, it may not be possible to accommodate all requests. It goes without saying that every priest is a minister of the Sacrament of Reconciliation and a preacher of mercy this year and every year. Deacons and Religious women and men can also be channels of the mercy of God outside the sacramental setting and should be used appropriately as their availability allows.
