50th Anniversary

Children in Coventry have gone back to the 60s to celebrate their school’s 50th anniversary.

Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School has held a celebration to mark its anniversary, with children and staff dressing up in clothes inspired by the 1960s.
Former pupils Pru Porretta MBE and Angela Whelan OBE, two of the very first people to attend school when it opened in 1967, visited the children to speak about their memories of Good Shepherd and their lasting friendship.

They also showed pupils their honours and spoke about their achievements during an inspirational assembly.

Yvonne Clarke, Principal of Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School – which is now part of the Romero Catholic Academy, said: ‘Fifty years is a very important milestone, and we are holding a number of events to mark the occasion and celebrate the history of our school.

‘All of the children and staff really enjoyed our non-uniform day and looked excellent in their 60s-inspired outfits. We also created displays of old photographs for the event so everyone could look back and see how much the school has changed over the years.
‘It was wonderful to welcome Pru and Angela back to Good Shepherd to speak about their time at the school. They are two truly inspirational former pupils and showed our children what you can achieve if you work hard.

‘Good Shepherd has been at the heart of the community for the last 50 years and has seen a number of positive developments over this time.

‘Going forward we will continue to give all of our pupils a first-class education, providing them with every opportunity to develop their skills and grow in confidence.

‘We are also expanding our offering, providing a full day nursery provision for children aged three-years-old.

‘We receive excellent feedback from parents on our nursery, so we wanted to provide them with even more choice by offering an all-day provision as well as morning and afternoon sessions.

‘Run by a qualified Early Years Foundation Stage teacher, the nursery effectively prepares children for Reception.’
